What's The Best Self-Hosted AI Tool For Studios Handling Confidential Client Work?

Design, architecture, post and games studios need AI that survives an NDA and a client questionnaire. The self-hosted options compared, plus per-client separation.

A client sends over a security questionnaire. Question 14: confirm whether any material supplied under this agreement has been entered into a generative AI service, and name the provider if it has. Someone has to answer that in writing, and it has to still be true six months later when the campaign ships.

That question is why studios ask about self-hosted AI. Design, architecture, post-production, advertising and games studios all sit on material that cannot leave the building: unreleased campaigns, unannounced products, embargoed launch dates, and client names that are themselves confidential. Getting a chat box running locally is the easy part. Getting one you can describe accurately in a questionnaire is the real requirement.

What does a studio actually need from a self-hosted AI tool?

Four things, and most tools deliver only the first: model inference on hardware you own, the assistant's stored notes on hardware you own, a way to keep client contexts apart, and a written answer you can hand a client without hedging.

The reason is contractual rather than technical. Studio NDAs restrict disclosure to third parties, and many now name subprocessors explicitly. Pasting a script, a brand book or an unannounced product name into a hosted chatbot is a disclosure to a company that was never listed in the agreement, whatever its retention policy says. In a studio that means embargoed scripts, design briefs for unreleased products, unannounced game titles, casting notes and your own rate card. The second requirement is the one studios miss. Plenty of tools run the model locally and then keep chat history or memory in an account somewhere. If the assistant remembers a client codename, wherever that memory lives is in scope for the same NDA as the file it came from.

Which self-hosted AI tools work for studios under NDA?

All the mainstream local runtimes keep inference on your machine, so the honest comparison is about what surrounds the model.

Raw Ollama is the tightest option because there is no interface to forget about, and the least useful if you wanted an assistant. LM Studio suits a technical director building tooling on a local API. How do I keep one client's material out of another client's work?

Run one project per client and keep anything identifying out of the shared profile. Project scoping organises memory into named projects, and the assistant only sees the active project, so client A's codename does not surface while you draft for client B.

A working setup for a studio:

  • One project per active engagement, named so you would not mind it appearing on a screen share.
  • Codenames, briefs, embargo dates and client terminology live inside that project.
  • The shared profile holds studio-level basics only: house style, tone of voice, British English, output formats.
  • When an engagement closes, archive or delete the project. Your original files stay where you put them.

Two honest limits. Project scoping is an organisational boundary, not a security one: anyone at that machine can switch projects. And the memory database is plain SQLite in your user data directory, so protection at rest comes from disk encryption at the operating system level (BitLocker, FileVault or LUKS), not from the app.

What about freelancers working on shared studio machines?

Give every freelancer a separate operating system account, and add the AI assistant to the machine handover checklist. Separate accounts mean separate user data directories, so one freelancer's projects are not in the next one's session.

  1. Separate accounts, always. A shared login on an edit suite defeats every other control on this list.
  2. Offboarding removes the account, which takes the local memory and project data with it.
  3. A named clause in the freelance contract covering which AI tools may touch client material.

Bring-your-own-device is the awkward case. You cannot audit a freelancer's own machine, so either supply a workstation for confidential engagements or write the restriction into the contract and accept that you are relying on trust. What do I tell a client who asks in writing whether their work went into an AI?

Answer with specifics rather than reassurance. Name the tool and how it is deployed, say where inference happened (in local mode there is no outbound request carrying the material), say what is retained and how it is protected at rest, say whether any hosted model touched this engagement, and say who had access. Vague comfort language is what makes procurement teams nervous.

Two things make that easier to give truthfully. If you do use hosted models elsewhere, only the current prompt and its assembled context go to the provider; the memory database, your files and prior history are not sent. Where does a local model fall short for studio work?

Local models are strong on text and weaker at the extremes. They will not match a frontier model on the hardest reasoning, and offline they cannot see the live web. Where they earn their place in a studio day:

  • Turning a rambling client call into actions and owners, or a tender answer into one that fits the word limit.

Frequently asked questions

Is a self-hosted AI tool enough to satisfy an NDA?

It removes the disclosure problem, which is usually the blocking issue, but it is not the whole answer. An NDA also covers access control, retention, and who can see the material. You still need disk encryption, separate accounts and a legal adviser who has read the agreement.

Does using InnerZero on paid client work need a licence?

Can the whole studio share one machine running the AI?

You can, but it works better as a per-workstation install. What happens to a client's material when the project ends?

Can the assistant read our project files without uploading them?
