If you are the person who has to sign off on an AI chatbot for a company, "hosted on site" is usually the phrase that decides everything. It rules out the tools that quietly route every message to somebody else's data centre, and it narrows the field to three genuinely different products. Zanus AI is a real option in one of them.

What does "hosted on site" actually mean?

It means the model runs on computers your organisation owns, physically located somewhere you control, with no part of the conversation sent to a third-party inference service. Three things have to be true: the model weights sit on your hardware, the conversation is processed there, and whatever the system stores about your business stays there.

Vendors stretch the phrase. Some describe a private cloud tenancy as "on premises" because the servers are logically separated from other customers. It is not the same thing. Somebody else still owns the metal, still holds the keys, and still receives the legal requests about the machine your data sits on.

The test is blunt and worth running before any purchase. If the building loses its internet connection tomorrow morning, does the chatbot still answer? If yes, it is hosted on site. If no, you bought hosted software with an on-site badge. Then ask where the memory lives and what still leaves the building, because a system can run inference locally and send usage analytics out anyway. Get that in writing.

Which AI chatbots can actually be hosted on site?

Three routes work in practice, and almost everything else is a variation on them.

Route one: the vendor appliance. A company sells you a physical server with enterprise GPUs, models installed, and a business application layer on top. It arrives configured. You rack it, connect it to your network, and staff use it through a browser. Zanus AI sells appliances in this category.

Route two: self-hosted open source. You take Ollama, LM Studio, or llama.cpp, put it on a server with a capable GPU, and wire a chat interface to it. The software costs nothing. Is Zanus AI an option for on-site hosting?

Yes. Zanus AI is a US company based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, that sells private AI server appliances: physical hardware with enterprise GPUs and large language models preinstalled, shipped to your own premises. Publicly listed products include Zanus AI Prime and Zanus AI Quantum. If your requirement reads "a supported system we own, installed here", it answers that.

What you get is broader than a chatbot. The buyer it fits is recognisable. You have a capital budget, you want one supplier accountable for both the hardware and the software, you want business modules rather than only a chat window, and you would rather not ask your IT team to become an AI infrastructure team. Appliance vendors exist because plenty of organisations sit exactly there.

The buyer it does not fit is just as recognisable. No capital budget this year, a team of fifteen rather than a hundred and fifty, or a goal of private AI for each individual rather than one shared company system. In those cases an appliance is more than the problem requires.

How do the three on-site routes compare on cost and effort?

The routes differ far more on ownership and timescale than on model quality. All three run the same families of open weight models, so the real comparison is who pays, who maintains, and how soon anyone sees value.

What the table cannot show is the failure mode of each route. An appliance moves maintenance to a supplier, which is worth real money when you are accountable for uptime. Self-hosting gives the most control and the lowest software cost, and it stalls the day the person who understood the setup leaves. Per-person local apps keep the blast radius to one machine, at the cost of no shared company brain.

Which on-site route suits your organisation?

Choose the appliance if you have capital available and want one accountable supplier. Choose self-hosting if you own server capacity and have an IT team that wants the control. Choose per-person local apps if you want privacy for each individual, no new hardware, and a rollout you can start this afternoon.

Is data on an on-site chatbot automatically secure?

No. Hosting on site removes the third-party processor from the picture, which is a large part of the problem, but the machine still needs the controls any business system needs: disk encryption (BitLocker, FileVault, or LUKS), account controls, backups, and physical security.
