The desktop-app pattern is the simplest thing that works. Each machine downloads the app and a model and runs everything on its own hardware, so nothing depends on the network. The cost is duplication: the same weights sit on every disk, and a laptop with integrated graphics is far slower than the desktop in the next room.

The third shape gets overlooked, and it is the one I would recommend to most people asking this. Run a full desktop app on each machine, but point its model engine at a shared host. Two caveats. "Supports Linux" often means one x86_64 build and nothing for ARM, so a Raspberry Pi may be out even when the copy says Linux. How do I point a desktop client at a model server on another computer?
The pattern is the same for every tool: run the model runtime on the GPU machine, tell it to listen on the network rather than only on localhost, then enter that address and port in the client. It is a five-minute job on a home network.
- Install Ollama, LM Studio or llama.cpp on the machine with the graphics card. That box does the thinking.
- Bind the runtime to the network. Ollama listens on localhost by default, so set
OLLAMA_HOSTto0.0.0.0before starting it. Its default port is 11434; a llama-server uses 8080. - Pull the models on the server, not the client. The client never stores weights here.
- In the client, enter
http://<server-ip>:11434and test. A good client lists the models the server is serving. - Leave the runtime running. Clients assume it is up and will not start it.

The part people skip is security. Local model runtimes ship with no authentication, so anyone who can reach that IP and port can use your models and read whatever passes through them. On a home LAN behind a router that is usually acceptable. The moment the server is reachable from outside, you need a VPN, a firewall rule, or a reverse proxy that asks for credentials. Forwarding port 11434 straight to the internet is the mistake to avoid.
What do you give up when one machine does all the thinking?
Four things. Offline use goes first: if the server is off or the network drops, every client is a chat box with nothing behind it. Second, you get a single point of failure, so one machine rebooting for updates stops everybody. Third, latency stacks up over anything slower than a LAN, and a slow VPN adds a visible delay before the first token appears. Fourth, and least obvious: sharing a model server does not share anything else.
To be concrete about InnerZero, because that last point catches people out. Pointing three machines at one Ollama host shares the model and the GPU. It does not share memory, settings or conversation history. Each install keeps its own SQLite database in its own user data directory, and InnerZero does not sync those between machines. To get the same history on a second machine, you copy the database file across yourself.
The privacy side is simpler than people assume. Prompts travel from client to your server over your own network and stop there. Nothing goes to us. The memory database stays on whichever machine wrote it, protected by whatever disk encryption you have enabled (BitLocker, FileVault or LUKS) rather than by app-level encryption. Cloud models stay optional and off unless you turn them on.
